The
Strand Hotel
92 Strand Road, Yangon, Myanmar (Burma)
|
|
The Strand Hotel, a famous national landmark, is situated on
Strand Road, overlooking the Yangon (Rangoon) River, centrally
located in the heart of Yangon within the city's main
commercial and diplomatic district.
With a civilisation that's more than 2,500 years old, Burma (Myanmar)
posesses a rich and vibrant cultural tradition. Great natural
beauty combines with magnificent temple architecture and
everywhere the visitor encounters welcoming and hospitable
people. Myanmar was once one of Asia's most inaccessible
countries. Having turned its back on the world, Myanmar
escaped the excesses of commercialisation. As a result, the
country has retained an enviable way of life from which we can
all learn. Today Myanmar has opened her doors, and as a
tourist destination is just beginning to flower, presenting a
terrific opportunity for those who wish to explore this unique
land. Buddhism, more than anything else, has shaped Burmese
history and culture. Although Myanmar is a devoutly Buddhist
country, the people have retained a wealth of lore and
superstitions which date back to the animistic beliefs of
their ancestors. Buddhism, a tolerant faith, does not
contradict these earlier traditions, which have become
entwined with the national religion, giving a rich texture to
spiritual life.

Yangon, the capital city and gateway into Myanmar, is cool and
green with lush tropical trees, shady parks and beautiful
lakes. Yangon was founded by King Alaungpaya on the site of a
small settlement called Dagon when he conquered lower Myanmar
in 1755. The name Yangon means "End of Strife" which
was anglicized to Rangoon after the British annexed Myanmar in
1885. The city was renamed Yangon in 1988.
The Strand Hotel was built in 1901 in a late Victorian
Colonial style, as one of a grand group of hotels owned by the
Sarkies brothers. The Strand Hotel is recognised as a national
landmark and has recently been renovated to reflect the epoch
of the 1920's and 1930's. Centrally located it is a good
choice for both the leisure traveller and business-person
visiting the city. The Strand Hotel has seen many changes over
the years but it has never lost its charm and sense of history.
